The cognitive test battery in BASE contains 14 tests measuring five intellectual abilities (perceptual speed, reasoning, memory, knowledge, fluency). At T5 8 out of the original 14 tests were included in the assessment.
Memory was measured by the following three tests:
a) Activity Recall (Lindenberger, Mayr, & Kliegl,
1993). Participants were asked to name or describe which tests they
had performed up to that point.
b) Memory for Text (Engel & Satzger, 1990). A short story
was presented both visually and auditorily. Immediately after the
presentation, participants had to answer six questions about the
content of the story. Responses were coded by two raters as wrong (=
2), correct (= 1), or absent (= 0).
c) Paired Associates (Lindenberger et al., 1993); 16 trials.
Participants were twice shown eight pairs of words. They were then
asked to complete each pair by naming the second word. Responses were
coded by two raters as wrong (= 2), correct (= 1), or absent (=
0).
The test scores for (a) and (c) correspond to the number of correct answers.
In addition, a Word List Test (Fleishmann & Oswald, 1986) was assessed at T6 to T8. A wordlist (8 words) was read out to the participants three times. After every trial there was a immediate recall. (Wortliste: Großstadt, Küste, Pfirsich, Mädchen, Sessel, Feier, Bettler, Nagel; word list: city, coast, peach, girl, armchair, celebration, beggar, nail)
For more detailed information about the procedures, see Lindenberger et al. (1993) or the "Intelligenz und Kognition" documentation at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development.
